Dextromethorphan or DXM is the active drug found in Coricidin and most other cough surpressants. Dextromethorphan has been used for recreational purposes since the 1970s, though it has recently become more and more popular among teens across the nation. Coricidin enters the body through the mouth and is orally swallowed. It takes about a half hour for the effects of the DXM to become active.
